Energy Independence

Energy Icon 2Maine needs to formulate and execute a long-term comprehensive energy plan that includes all aspects of viable and commercially sustainable renewable energy technologies.  We should be focusing on the ways we can promote renewable energy in Maine right away.

We need to act boldly to get Maine off our dependence on foreign oil and keep the money here in Maine.

We need to create opportunities and let private enterprise lead the way out of Maine’s energy crisis to build a model that will be emulated throughout the nation.

Maine needs a stated goal of energy independence.  Ultimately, if Maine declares energy independence, and takes meaningful steps in that direction, the industry will follow.

Government plays a huge role in stimulating many businesses, especially oil (federal tax subsidies, creating shipping corridors, roads and other transportation systems to move the oil).  Government needs to stop enabling us to use the products we shouldn’t (oil) and start incenting us to use alternative fuels.  Government needs to stimulate consumers via private enterprise so that consumers can make the choice of alternative energy options such as wind, solar, geothermal and thermal biomass energy sources.

In the 21st century, we will need clean, renewable power.  We need to use Maine’s resources to expedite this.  And we need to act boldly . . . now.

If we don’t shift our focus away from oil – make the collective decision to invest in alternative renewable resources – we’ll never end our addiction to oil, control our costs and save Maine for our kids and their kids.

Maine needs to warm from within.  The wind is blowing.  The trees are growing.  The sun is shining.  And the core of the earth is warm.  The future of energy consumption in Maine can start changing today.  It is up to us.
